Coastal vs. Inland Population
The coastal zone in Wisconsin consists of the 15 counties that border Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Coastal counties account for 39.0% of the population of the state according to the 1990 Census. This drops to 37.1% according to the 2000 Census.
Coastal Regions
According to the 1990 Census, the four southeastern coastal counties (Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha) make up 70% of the coastal population. The seven counties in the Bay-Lake region (Marinette, Oconto, Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Shebogan) make up 25.9% of the coastal population. The four Lake Superior counties (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron) make up just 4.1% of the coastal population. According to the 2000 Census, the four southeastern coastal counties make up 68.3% of the coastal population. The seven counties in the Bay-Lake region now make up 27.6% of the coastal population. The four Lake Superior counties make up 4.1% of the coastal population.
Coastal Population Change
Population in Wisconsin coastal counties increased by a total of 84,612 residents between 1990 and 2000. This translates to an increase of 4.4%. Inland counties increased at a rate of 13.0%, significantly faster than the rate for coastal counties. The state growth rate for the period from 1990 to 2000 was 9.6%. The southeastern coastal counties grew at a rate of 1.9%, the Bay-Lake counties at 11.2%, and the Lake Superior counties at 4.9%. The fastest growing counties were Oconto at 17.9%, Kenosha at 16.7%, Brown at 16.5%, and Ozaukee at 13.0%. The slowest growing counties were Manitowoc at 3.1%, Ashland at 3.4%, and Douglas at 3.7%. The population in Milwaukee County decreased by 2.0%.
