Coastal vs. Inland Population

The coastal zone in Wisconsin consists of the 15 counties that border Lake Michigan and Lake Superior. Coastal counties account for 39.0% of the population of the state according to the 1990 Census.

Coastal Regions

According to the 1990 Census, the four southeastern coastal counties (Ozaukee, Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha) make up 70% of the coastal population. The seven counties in the Bay-Lake region (Marinette, Oconto, Brown, Door, Kewaunee, Manitowoc, and Shebogan) make up 25.9% of the coastal population. The four Lake Superior counties (Douglas, Bayfield, Ashland, and Iron) make up just 4.1% of the coastal population.

Coastal Population Change

Population in Wisconsin coastal counties increased by a total of 73,123 residents between 1990 and 1998. This translates to an increase of 3.8%. Inland counties increased at a rate of 9.0%, significantly faster than the rate for coastal counties. The state growth rate for the period from 1990 to 1998 was 7.0%. The southeastern coastal counties grew at a rate of 2.2%, the Bay-Lake counties at 8.5%, and the Lake Superior counties at 2.3%. The fastest growing counties were Brown at 12.1%, Kenosha at 10.4%, Ozaukee at 10.0%, and Oconto at 9.5%. The slowest growing counties were Douglas at 1.3%, Iron and Ashland at 2.9%, and Door at 3.3%. The population in Milwaukee County decreased by 0.3%.
