Wisconsin Local Government Web Mapping Sites

Most county governments in Wisconsin (67 of 72 or 93%) have developed publicly accessible, interactive web mapping sites. An additional two counties have sites in development. A growing number of municipalities and towns (30 of 1,851) are implementing interactive web mapping sites. This web site provides a means to access those that are available to the public and to track those sites in development. It does not attempt to inventory local government web sites that provide only tabular access to tax assessment records.

County web mapping sites can be accessed by clicking on the pink counties on the map below. Counties with web mapping sites in development are colored in yellow. Links to county web mapping sites, local government GIS data downloads/web mapping services, and municipal/town government web mapping sites are provided in the tables below the map and will open in a separate browser window.

Links to county and municipal/town web mapping sites in Wisconsin are now made available in a KML file format. KML is an acronym for Keyhole Markup Language. It is the primary data format used by Google Earth and several other virtual globe programs. The Open Geospatial Consortium announced KML as an open standard in April 2008.

Interactive web mapping sites in Wisconsin can also be discovered and accessed through other sources. The Wisconsin Land INformation Clearinghouse (WiscLINC) is maintained by the Wisconsin State Cartographer's Office. Click on the Catalog tab. Under the Search dialog, choose Select All under the Places Menu and choose Interactive Maps for the Resource Type. You can also search for web mapping services. Jerry Sullivan of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources maintains a comprehensive guide on "Streaming Web Mapping Services to Your Desktop". Several Wisconsin regional planning commissions keep track of county and municipal web mapping sites in their region, including the Southeastern Wisconsin RPC, the East Central Wisconsin RPC, and the North Central Wisconsin RPC.

Municipal/Town Web Mapping Sites (30)

A growing number of municipal and town governments in Wisconsin are developing interactive web mapping sites. I've shared links for sites for 20 cities, eight villages, and two towns. With 592 cities and villages, and 1,259 towns in Wisconsin, these web mapping sites are harder to keep track of than the counties.
